Cool climate, heritage homes, diplomatic enclave
Hill Station is Freetown at its most established - colonial-era homes on large plots, tree-lined streets, and temperatures that run three to four degrees cooler than the coast. Historically the government and diplomatic enclave; today it splits between long-term residents and premium rentals.

The "hill" is literal. Hill Station sits at about 300m above sea level, giving it a micro-climate that residents swear by. Mornings are crisp, the harmattan season is noticeably kinder, and malaria mosquitoes are less aggressive here than in low-lying areas.
Housing is dominated by heritage detached homes on plots of 800-2000m² with walled gardens. Many were originally colonial civil-service quarters. Newer developments are mostly boutique (4-6 unit) apartment blocks rather than high-rises. Expect to pay a premium - the most expensive long-term rentals in Freetown are here, followed by Aberdeen.
Road access is via Signal Hill Road from below or Tower Hill Road from the city. Paving is generally good on the main routes; some side streets revert to laterite. Power + water are more reliable than the peninsula average because many properties have been upgraded by successive diplomatic tenants.
